It’s Not About The Box Improving Care at Group Health with People, Process and Technology

About the Blog “It’s Not About the Box”

A great idea (or quotation) is often attributed to many sources – I first heard the adage “It’s not about the box” from Jack Cochrane MD when he was the Medical Director for KP Colorado and they were implementing Epic. He helped his group recognize that as seductive as technology can be, it is not what we are about – we are about taking great care of our patients. It is never (should be) about the technology – its what we can do for our patients.

Our group had the good fortune to have Ted Eytan MD help our group enter the world of Web 2.0 with the informatics blog (which is archived in this blog).   Our next iteration of the blog shifts the focus more explicitly from the tool kit to what we are trying to do for our patients – hence the name of the blog and the domain name

On this blog we will share our experience working to improve the quality of care we provide Group Health patients – we are working to solve for clinical quality, the care experience and affordability simultaneously. The toolset – Epic and MyGroupHealth and our measurement systems is great – but the way we use these tools is more of the focus than the tools themselves. We benefit from having a forum to have an open discussion of how we can improve the tools and the care we provide. It is a team sport – and front line clinical teams and patients are the most important players. So lets talk about how we support each other meeting the needs of our patients.
